Integrated Fraud Detection System
i3G is a powerful next-generation-network (GPRS/3G) fraud monitoring application that collects and processes rich, diverse data from multiple layers within the new network technologies. The monitoring system provides network fraud analysts with the tools to be able to quickly and effectively identify fraudulent activity within the new services being launched as part of the GPRS/3G rollout.
The network fraud intelligence provided by i3G is calculated using a combination of thresholds and inference rule analysis. The system creates PDP context session data records by processing data created on the GPRS support nodes. The system correlates and aggregates G-CDR and S-CDR data into a session record for each PDP context. The session record is often created before the PDP context is released so that analysis can be performed on partial sessions. The sessions are rated according to the specific rating models defined, and i3G can support multiple, multi-tiered rating models.
Fraud exists where there is a monetary gain to be made. It is difficult to predict what frauds will prove practical in GPRS, as they will depend on variables such as:
- Charging mechanisms
- Billing mechanisms
- Services offered
- Technical weaknesses in the processes
- Business weaknesses in the processes
There are many ways of gaining revenue from frauds, and this bounty may make GPRS attractive to a fraudster as telecommunications crime is a very large, global business. In GPRS, and also in the progression to 3G data services, the types of fraud that are likely to appear in the Next Generation Networks (NGN) are purely speculative. It is understood however, that fraud will appear if the network operators do not apply new technology to improve security in many areas of operation.
